Low: €249.00 High: €399.99

Pros

  • Nano IPS panel with excellent color accuracy (98% DCI-P3)
  • 165Hz refresh rate (180Hz overclocked) for buttery smooth gameplay
  • 1ms GtG response time — minimal ghosting
  • NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible and AMD FreeSync Premium
  • Excellent out-of-box calibration for both gaming and creative work
  • Thin bezels and clean design

Cons

  • Contrast ratio (1000:1) is typical IPS — blacks are grayish in dark rooms
  • No USB hub or USB-C input
  • Stand offers tilt/height/pivot but wobbles slightly
  • HDR400 certification is underwhelming — HDR content doesn't shine

Verdict: The best 27-inch 1440p gaming monitor for those who want speed and color accuracy without spending a fortune.

Overview

The 27GP850-B sits in LG’s UltraGear lineup as a no-compromise 1440p gaming monitor. It doesn’t just aim to be fast—it aims to be beautiful. By leveraging LG’s proprietary Nano IPS technology, it bridges the gap between the speed competitive gamers need and the color fidelity content creators demand.

Panel Technology: What is Nano IPS?

Unlike standard IPS panels, Nano IPS applies a layer of nanoparticles to the LED backlight to absorb excess light wavelengths. The result? Cleaner reds and greens, and a wider color gamut.

  • Color Accuracy: I measured 98% DCI-P3 coverage. For a “gaming” monitor, this is exceptional. You can confidently trust this display for tasks like photo editing and video grading when set to the sRGB clamp mode.
  • Contrast: The Achilles’ heel of IPS remains. At 800:1 to 1000:1, blacks will look dark gray in a pitch-black room. If you game primarily at night, a VA panel or OLED might be a better choice, but for mixed usage, it’s a worthy trade-off for the color performance.

Motion Clarity & Speed

165Hz (overclockable to 180Hz) at 1440p is the current reliable sweet spot for GPUs like the RTX 4070 series.

  • Response Time: LG claims 1ms GtG. In practice, using the “Fast” overdrive setting, ghosting is virtually non-existent.
  • Input Lag: At roughly 4ms, it feels instantaneous. Do not use the “Fastest” setting—it introduces inverse ghosting (overshoot) that looks like bright halos around moving objects. Stick to “Fast.”

Features for Gamers

  • G-Sync & FreeSync: Both are supported flawlessly. LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) kicks in below 48fps to prevent tearing, which is a lifesaver for unoptimized titles.
  • Black Stabilizer: A cheat code for competitive shooters. It brightens dark corners without washing out the rest of the image, revealing campers in shadows.
  • Crosshair Overlay: Built-in hardware crosshairs for games that don’t support them.

Ergonomics & Design

The stand is a mixed bag. It offers comprehensive adjustment—tilt, height (110mm), and pivot (90° for coding/reading vertical chat). However, the V-shaped feet take up significant desk depth. The build is “gamer” plastic with red accents on the back, but viewed from the front, it’s clean and bezel-less on three sides.

Competition

  • MSI MAG274QRF-QD: Uses Quantum Dot technology for even more saturated colors and better contrast, but often suffers from oversaturation issues out of the box and slower response times.
  • Gigabyte M27Q-X: Offers 240Hz for a similar price, but uses a BGR subpixel layout that can make text look slightly fuzzy in Windows. The LG is shaper for text and work.

Final Verdict

For 1440p gaming mixed with creative work, the LG 27GP850-B is the definition of “reliable excellence.” It doesn’t have the infinite contrast of OLED, but it also doesn’t have the burn-in risk or the premium price tag. It is the best all-rounder LCD monitor on the market.
